The holdings of the Department of Prints, Photographs, and Architectural Collections number approximately 3 million items and include photographs and film and glass negatives (1851--); Dutch, English, and American historical prints (1626--); architectural records and drawings of major American practitioners (1798--) including McKim, Mead, and White and Cass Gilbert; and a voluminous collection of advertising ephemera (1700--). Of great depth and scope, the collections document the social, political, economic and cultural history of New York City, its environs and the State of New York from the earliest times, and of the American experience from the early years of the nation to the present.
