Historical/Biographical Note
Lucy Jefferies Chamberlain was born on July 12, 1893. She attended the New York School of Social Work from 1921 to 1923, Columbia University's School of Journalism from 1925 to 1926 and received her B.S. (1927), A.M. (1930) and Ph.D. (1932) from New York University. In 1928 she became a lecturer in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at New York University; in 1929 she was promoted to assistant professor; in 1943 she was appointed full professor and held this position until her death in 1969. In addition to teaching, Chamberlain assumed administrative duties as Chairman of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology from 1948 to 1958. From 1953 to 1958 she also lectured at New York University's Graduate School of Public Administration.
Chamberlain was also an active member of the American Red Cross, for which she served as the executive secretary of the Lafayette County chapter in Darlington, Wisconsin during the summer of 1922.

The Lucy Jefferies Chamberlain Diaries document three different periods in her life. The first two cover the periods March 1915 to July 1916 and August 1916 to February 1918 respectively. The third one is an account of her first experience as a lone worker in a rural community, written while she served as executive secretary of the Lafayette County Chapter of the American Red Cross in Darlington, Wisconsin.
