Abstract
Clinton Mindil was commissioned with the task of compiling a list of those from New York University who had fought in World War I. Materials in this collection outline through correspondence the process of putting together such a War Record. The collection also includes an edited typescript of the compilation and photocopies of the correspondence and typescript.
Historical Note
After World War I, New York University created a compilation of names and short biographies of all the NYU students, alumni, and faculty who fought in the war. Clinton Mindil, a professor of English at NYU and in the Home Study Department at Columbia University, worked with the NYU Dean of Faculties, Marshall Snow, during the 1920s to put together a list with short biographical narratives of all the New York University students, alumni, and faculty involved in the war.
The War Record was intended for publication by the New York University Press but was never published.
Arrangement
The correspondence is arranged chronologically and the War Record manuscript is organized first by casualties, then alphabetically within University affiliation (council, faculty, and students are listed separately).
Scope and Contents
This collection is comprised of correspondence dating from 1917 to 1936 concerning the creation and status of the Records of Alumni and Students who Served in the World War and the edited typescript of the volume created in the 1920s. This volume lists all the NYU students, faculty, and alumni who served in World War I. Photocopies of the correspondence and typescript are also included.
