Abstract

The Records of the Office of Public Affairs contain the administrative records and subject files of the department as well as university-issued press releases and news clippings regarding university events.

Historical Note

The Office of Public Affairs works to support the strategic goals of the university through communication with the external community and the news media. The work of the Office of Public Affairs is aimed at recruiting an exceptional faculty and student body as well as supporting research and teaching goals of the university. The Office of Public Affairs represents all of New York University's (NYU) schools and units, working to emphasize NYU's role as a leading research university, both within New York City and internationally.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged in four series: Series I: Administrative Files, Series II: Subject Files, Series III: Press Releases, and Series IV: News Clippings. Administrative and subject files are arranged alphabetically. Press releases and newspaper clippings are arranged by date.

Scope and Content

The collection contains administrative records of the Office of Public Affairs, press releases, and news clippings related to the university.

Access Restrictions

Administrative records and unpublished reports of New York University are closed for a period of 20 years from the date of their creation. Access to files spanning multiple years will be opened to researchers based on the date of the most recent materials. Board of Trustees records are closed for 35 years from the date of creation. Materials related to personnel, grievances, job and fellowship searches and applications, and all files that fall under the federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) are permanently restricted. Additional restrictions may apply to other materials in this collection. For questions regarding specific restrictions, please contact the University Archives.

Some materials are stored offsite and advance notice is required for use. Please request materials at least two business days prior to your research visit to coordinate access.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The records were transferred to the University Archives by the Office of Public Affairs over several years. Additional accretions were received in 2016 and 2017; the accession numbers associated with this transfer are 2016.025 and 2017.003.

Processing Information

Decisions concerning arrangement, description, and physical interventions in this collection before 2017 have not yet been recorded. In 2017 an accretion was added to an existing series in the records arrangement. The material was placed in acid free boxes and remained within its original folders.

In August 2017, one painting was retroactively accessioned into the collection and was prepared to be moved to offsite art storage in September 2017.

In December 2018, Series III and IV were prepared for offsite transfer.

In April 2019, a box container binders of chronological administrative records and press releases (1986-1989) was discovered. The files were rehoused and added to Series III and V as boxes 126 and 127.
