Abstract
This collection is made up of the papers of the Office of the Director of Student Affairs at New York University's University Heights campus from 1896 until 1973, when the campus closed. It includes records of various student organizations, events, and fraternities and sororities.
History of the Office of Student Affairs
New York University opened its University Heights campus in 1894. The Office of the Director of Student Affairs was in charge of housing for students as well as providing support for student groups and organizing student events. Overall, the office worked to enhance student life outside of the classroom. The office oversaw student clubs, such as academic and social fraternities and sororities, and events held for students like commencement. In the 1940s the director of the office was Alan Coutts, who was succeeded by former assistant dean of Yale College, Dr. Lewis M. Wiggin, in 1955. However, this collection comprises primarily the papers of the following two directors: Philip Price, who took the job in 1958, and Hans Hopf, who replaced Price following his death in 1969.

Scope and Contents
This collection consists of the records of the Office of the Director of Student Affairs at New York University's University Heights campus. Records include correspondence, proposals, and promotional material related to student events, such as Senior Class Night and commencement, as well as information on the construction and organization of the Gould Student Center. Minutes and election records are included for the Student Council as well as the Committee on Student Activities. There are also student organization papers for clubs and publications such as The Violet (yearbook), the Heights Young Republicans, and the Equestrian Club, among many other groups. Also found here are pledge lists and correspondence from several fraternities.
