Abstract
Joseph Edmund Woodman was a professor and head of the Geology Department at New York University from 1909-1938. Materials in this collection include letters related to Woodman's retirement and memorial service, and lecture notes on meteorology.
Biographical Note
Joseph Edmund Woodman was a professor of geology at New York University's School of Engineering for 29 years. Woodman was born in Newbury (now West Newbury), Massachusetts on July 4, 1873, and attended Harvard University for his undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degrees. After the completion of his studies, he was appointed Professor of Geology at Dalhousie University, where he became a full professor and head of the department. He eventually became a mining geologist before succeeding James J. Stevenson as Professor of Geology at NYU. During his time at NYU, Woodman wrote on geology, meteorology and aeronautical meteorology. From 1926 to 1938, he held a special lectureship in meteorology, and from 1935 to 1938, he served as a director of NYU's meteorological observatory. He eventually became the head of the Department of Geology and was named Professor Emeritus of Geology upon his retirement. Woodman passed away on May 19, 1939.

The collection contains a bound volume of letters that describe Woodman's retirement in 1938 and a dinner in his honor. Also included in the collection are records relating to his memorial service, letters sent on the occasion of his death in 1939, and lecture notes on meteorology.

Processing Information
The contents of a binder containing lecture notes on meteorology were rehoused into two folders in July 2012. The binder was discarded due to its deteriorating condition. Cataloging information from the library at the University Heights campus was retained and is held in folder 5.
