Abstract

The Blossom and Hill family papers date from 1842 to 1902 and measure one linear foot. Items include travel journals to Europe by Josephine Hill and Mary Hill; correspondence, news clippings, diaries, and recipe books belonging to Sarah Hill Blossom; printed material collected by the Blossom family, including programs from the Church of the Savior in Brooklyn Heights; and news clippings from the period, such as the statement by Ulysses S. Grant beginning the tradition of Thanksgiving Day in 1869.

Biographical note

The Blossom and Hill families lived on Hicks Street in the Brooklyn Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, N.Y. Sarah C. Hill (1851-1903) married Frederick Blossom (b. 1830) in 1872 in Brooklyn. Their first child, Katherine E. Blossom (also known as Katrinella) was born in Brooklyn in 1874. She attended the Packer Institute in Brooklyn Heights.

Scope and Contents

The Blossom and Hill family papers date from 1842 to 1902 and measure one linear foot. Items include travel journals to Europe by Josephine Hill and Mary Hill; correspondence, news clippings, diaries, and recipe books belonging to Sarah Hill Blossom; printed material collected by the Blossom family, including programs from the Church of the Savior in Brooklyn Heights; and news clippings from the period, such as the statement by Ulysses S. Grant beginning the tradition of Thanksgiving Day in 1869. The collection contains multiple image formats, including a cartes-de-visite of the Baptist church at Clinton and Pacific Streets, circa 1890; one oversize silver gelatin print, circa 1915, of the interior of 212 Columbia Heights; and one cabinet card of a Blossom family gathering, dated 1880. Lastly, three scrapbooks are contained in the collection, all of which originate from Katrinella Blossom: a scrapbook from her trip to Europe, 1890-1891, and two journals with sketches and clippings, dated 1902.
