Abstract
The DeWitt Clinton papers date from 1826 and 1827 and contain two letters from New York Governor Clinton regarding Leffert Lefferts's desire to resign as a judge from the Kings County Court, and a letter from Clinton to John Wyckoff, Sheriff of Kings County, regarding Wyckoff's expenses. They also contain an 1828 letter from C.A. Clinton to Charles P. Harrison regarding an engraving of DeWitt Clinton, and a scrap showing the engraving.
Biographical Note
DeWitt Clinton (1769-1828) was an eminent New York politician who was instrumental in the passing of landmark legislation and the building of the Erie Canal. He was a United States Senator from 1802 to 1803; Mayor of New York City for the majority of the period of 1803 to 1815; and Governor of New York from 1817 to 1821 and 1825 to 1828 (1).
Leffert Lefferts (1774-1847) was a Bedford lawyer and later a Kings County judge.
John Wyckoff was Kings County Sheriff from 1825 to 1828.
