Abstract

This collection includes proclamations issued in 1976 by Brooklyn Borough President Sebastian Leone, New York City Mayor Abraham D. Beame, and New York State Governor Hugh L. Carey in observance of the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Long Island. The proclamations establish August 27, 1976 as "Battle of Long Island Observance Day" and October 17, 1976 as "Whig and Tory Day." Also included is a letter from the New York State Governor's Office to Edward J. Whitney, President of the Citizens Committee of Brooklyn, regarding the issuing of the Governor's proclamation.

Historical Note

The Battle of Long Island (also known as the Battle of Brooklyn) occurred on August 27, 1776 in what is now the borough of Brooklyn, N.Y. The battle was the largest of the American Revolutionary War. It resulted in a victory for the British army and the retreat of the Continental Army through Manhattan and New Jersey into Pennsylvania.
