Abstract

The Reverend William I. Chalmers served as pastor of the Congregational church in Riverhead, New York, during the late 19th century. The collection includes two manuscripts written and presented by Chalmers in the 1890s concerning the history of Congregationalism in Suffolk County, N.Y.

The Reverend William I. Chalmers served as pastor of the Congregational church in Riverhead, New York during the late 19th century. Chalmers wrote and published books on the history of the town of Riverhead and the Congregational church in Aquebogue, New York.

The collection includes two manuscripts written and presented by Reverend William I. Chalmers:

"Historical sketch of Congregationalism in Suffolk County, 1791-1891, with references to the earlier history." This is "A paper read at the Centennial Anniversary of the Organization of the Long Island Convention, at Aquebogue, Nov. 11, 1891."

"A brief history of Congregationalism in Suffolk County, N.Y." This is "A paper read at the meeting of the General Association of New York in the Congregational Church, Patchogue, May 18, 1893."

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Accession 1980.029 (the 1891 paper) was purchased at the sale of Charles J. Werner's books at the American Art Association, 1927. Accession 1973.103 (the 1893) paper is annotated as having been obtained by C.J.W. (Charles J. Werner) from Chalmers' widow in 1919. It is not clear how the manuscript came to Brooklyn Historical Society, but it is likely that it was purchased in the same 1927 sale as that of 1980.029.
