Abstract

The collection consists of a ledger and a handwritten transcription of a petition, dated April 21, 1777, and signed by freeholders and other residents of Kings County, New York.

The collection consists of a ledger and a handwritten transcription of a petition, dated April 21, 1777, and signed by freeholders and other residents of Kings County, New York. It is addressed to British naval officer, Lord Viscount Richard Howe, and Commander-in-Chief of British forces, Sir William Howe. The petition requests the return of horses and wagons confiscated by the British military or compensation for the confiscated property. The transcriber is unknown. The ledger is an original document and lists the names of owners of horses and wagons on Long Island, as well as the numbers of horses and wagons owned by each.
