This collection consists of correspondence spanning 1905 to 1907 and regarding the acquisition of the Old Fort Johnson property by the Montgomery County Historical Society.
Historical Note
Old Fort Johnson, a National Historic Landmark located in Montgomery County, N.Y., was the 18th-century home of Sir William Johnson, an official of the British Empire. It was later owned by wealthy philanthropist John de Watts Peyster, who presented it to the Montgomery County Historical Society in the early 20th century. As of 2011, the Montgomery County Historical Society continues to own and operate Old Fort Johnson as a historic site and museum.
Scope and Contents
This collection consists of correspondence spanning 1905 to 1907 and regarding the acquisition of the Old Fort Johnson property by the Montgomery County Historical Society. Correspondence is among various individuals with a vested interested in the acquisition of Fort Johnson, including lawyers Morris P. Ferris (founder of the New York State Historical Association), Edmund Wetmore, and E.P. White. Additional letters are between Ferris's wife, Mary L.D. Ferris, and John Watts de Peyster. A small amount of news clippings regarding John Watts de Peyster and the acquisition of his property is also included.
