Abstract

This collection contains a small assortment of items spanning 1933 to 1961 and celebrating the life and military career of Wladimir Krzyzanowski, and concerning Krzyzanowski's burial at Green-Wood Cemetery and subsequent transfer to Arlington National Cemetery.

Biographical Note

Wladimir B. Krzyzanowski (1824-1887) was a Polish American who worked as an engineer in New York. During the Civil War, Krzyzanowski commanded the 58th Regiment of the New York Volunteer Infantry, known as the Polish Legion. The Legion served in the Battles of Bull Run, Chancellorsville, Chattanooga, Cross Keys, and Gettysburg. After the War, Krzyzanowski was appointed a Special Agent of the Treasury Department at the New York Customs House. He was originally buried in Brooklyn's Green-Wood Cemetery, but his remains were later transferred to Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA.

Scope and Contents

This collection contains a small assortment of items spanning 1933 to 1961 and celebrating the life and military career of Wladimir Krzyzanowski, and concerning Krzyzanowski's burial at Green-Wood Cemetery and subsequent transfer to Arlington National Cemetery. Items include correspondence, clippings, postcards, and programs, most of which are only included as photocopies. The majority of the materials were created by the American Legion Frank J. Dombrowski Post No. 965 of Brooklyn, as well as the National General Krzyzanowski Memorial Committee.
