Biographical note

Ezra Stiles (1727-1795) was an American educator, Congregationalist minister, author, theologian, and president of Yale College from 1778-1795.

Scope and Contents

Ezra Stiles diary extracts on the Battle of Long Island, transcribed by Franklin B. Dexter in 1868. The extracts are handwritten and housed in a single bound volume. They collect entries by Stiles, a fervent supporter of the American Revolution, concerning the Battle of Long Island. Though Stiles was not present at the battle, he received correspondence from many who were, and actively followed news of the battle from his home in Newport, Rhode Island. The diary from which the extracts were transcribed was owned by the Yale College library at the time of the transcription.
