Abstract

Bound, handwritten transcript of a memorial for Elias Lewis, Jr., read by Dr. Charles E. West before the American Ethnological Society at the Museum of Natural History in New York City, 1894.

Biographical Note

Elias Lewis, Jr. (1820-1894) was born in the Long Island town of Westbury, and relocated to Brooklyn in 1853, where he worked in business and finance. He was later Secretary of the Long Island Historical Society (now the Brooklyn Historical Society).

Charles E. West (1809-1900) was the head of the Brooklyn Heights Seminary and a prominent member of the Long Island Historical Society.
