Correspondence written by John Vliet of Brooklyn while he served in the 84th New York Infantry Regiment (also known as the 14th Regiment of the New York State Militia, or the "Fighting 14th") during the American Civil War.
Historical Note
John Vliet (b. 1835) was a soldier in the 84th New York Infantry Regiment, commonly known as the 14th Regiment of the New York State Militia, or the "Fighting 14th," during the American Civil War. After the War, several members of the 84th Regiment reenlisted for service in the New York State National Guard, though it is not known if Vliet was among them.
Scope and Contents
Correspondence written by John Vliet of Brooklyn while he served in the 84th New York Infantry Regiment (also known as the 14th Regiment of the New York State Militia, or the "Fighting 14th") during the American Civil War. The letters describe military life and wartime events, and are mostly addressed to Vliet's employer, Charles Collings of New York City. The letters span the dates May 20, 1861 to May 24, 1864. Also included are a printed hymn and three photographs of members of the 84th Infantry Regiment.
