Historical note
According to its constitution and bylaws, the Gowanus Debating Society was founded "to improve the members thereof in speaking by discussing different questions." The Society was governed by a President, Treasurer, Secretary, Recording Secretary, and Bookkeeper.
Scope and Contents
The Gowanus Debating Society records span the period 1822 to 1826 and measure 0.1 linear feet. The records include three items: a minute book, dated 1826; the Society's constitution, dated 1822; and an account book, dated 1823. The minute book summarizes the meetings of the Society, including the issues discussed and debated at each meeting, while the account book records the Society's financial transactions. Many of the records were handwritten by the Society's Secretary, Teunis G. Bergen.
