Abstract
A four page document that records the 1791 judgment of a Kings County (N.Y.) panel of arbitrators in an unspecified dispute between the executors of the estate of Wilhemus Van Brunt and William B. Gifford of Flatbush. Van Brunt and Gifford were brothers-in-law. Col. Rutgert Van Brunt (Gravesend) and Rutgert W. Van Brunt (New Utrecht) were the executors. Surnames on the panel were Lefferts, Sands, Cortelyou, Couwenhoven, and Stillwell. The panel found in favor of the Van Brunt estate. The last page of the document includes the signed acknowledgements of the Van Brunts as having received payments in satisfaction of the award (1792-1794).
Biographical / Historical
Although somewhat uncertain, the principals referenced in this document are likely as follows: Wilhemus Van Brunt (1723-1790), a farmer of New Utrecht; Col. Rutgert Van Brunt (1733-1812) of Gravesend, a farmer, county official at the time of this document, and a brother of Wilhemus; Rutgert W. Van Brunt (1757-1834) of New Utrecht, a son of Wilhemus. Wilhemus married Jannetje Van Voorhees in 1750. Her sister was Annatie, who married William B. Gifford, thereby relating the Giffords to Wilhemus by marriage. (See Teunis G. Bergen, Genealogy of the Van Brunt Family, 1653-1867, page 17-18, 17f, 41.)
