The Brevoort family papers contain materials documenting the personal and business
affairs of four generations of the Brevoort family, a prosperous family of Dutch origin
who lived in both Manhattan and Brooklyn. The collection spans the period 1760 to
1879 (bulk dates 1828 to 1847) and contains correspondence, legal documents (estate
records, wills, bonds, land conveyances and deeds, and business documents), miscellaneous
printed material, genealogical notes, and one scrapbook. The majority of the collection
concerns Henry Brevoort, Jr. (1782-1848), in particular his property that was located
in what is today the West Village neighborhood of Manhattan; James Carson Brevoort
(1818-1887); and Henry L. Brevoort (1849-1895). The genealogical notes include information
on the Brevoort family, as well as the Lefferts family of Brooklyn, among others.
