Abstract

The printed broadsides in this collection are primarily from Long Island, Brooklyn, and Queens, with some from other areas of New York State, and date from 1781 to 1918. Subjects represented in the broadsides include politics, elections, horse races, advertising, the construction of piers along the East River, public land auctions, and the New York State Militia, among others.

This collection consists of various printed broadsides compiled by librarians at the Long Island Historical Society (now the Center for Brooklyn History). The broadsides are primarily from Long Island, Brooklyn, and Queens, with some from other areas of New York State, and date from 1781 to 1918. Subjects represented in the broadsides include politics, elections, horse races, advertising, the construction of piers along the East River, public land auctions, and the New York State Militia, among others.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

One broadside from 1838 concerning a public auction for land in Newtown, Long Island was the gift of Dorothy G. Hathaway, 1956. Sources and dates of acquisition for remaining broadsides in the collection are unknown. The collection was formally accessioned in 1977.
