Abstract:

This collection contains school composition books and diaries dating from 1849 to
1901 and belonging to various Brooklyn residents, including Maggie E. Briggs (a student
at Packer Collegiate Institute), H.W. Condit, Maude DeForest-Winder, L.P. Nostrand,
and Kate St. John-Reynolds. The books and diaries contain students' homework assignments,
mathematical and grammatical exercises, clippings, and various notes and drawings.
Also included is one housekeeping account book. The collection was artificially compiled
from various sources by library staff at the Long Island Historical Society (later
the Brooklyn Historical Society).
