Abstract

A typewritten manuscript by Wesley L. Baker on Thomas Osman and the early history of his settlement at Hashamomuck Neck in present-day Southold, Long Island, N.Y. Thomas Osman was born in England in 1621 and established a settlement at Hashamomuck Neck around 1637 or 1638. The manuscript covers the period circa 1637 to 1700.

Scope and Contents

A typewritten manuscript by Wesley L. Baker on Thomas Osman and the early history of his settlement at Hashamomuck Neck in present-day Southold, Long Island, N.Y. The manuscript covers the period circa 1637 to 1700.

Its title page reads: Study of the 1658 and 1686 Depositions of Thomas Osman and Early History of Hashamomuck in the Town of Southold, Long Island, N.Y. by Wesley L. Baker, author of Monell Genealogy (1946) and member of Long Island Historical Society, in collaboration with Dr. Arthur Channing Downs, Jr., author of several family histories and editor of the Riverhead Town Records (1967), 1969.

The manuscript is divided into chapters. Chapter three describes "the persons and events described in [the] 1658 deposition," including Osman, William Purrier, James Reeve, William Salmon, Thomas Reeve, Thomas Terrill, Henry Whitney, Edward Tredwell, Thomas Benedict, William Alexander (First Earl of Stirling), James Farrett, and Mathew Sunderland.

There is also a bibliography and an index of the names of persons mentioned.
