Abstract

The Mary DeSaussure Sobers collection contains materials concerning Sobers's track career. Materials include correspondence, programs, publications, newspaper clippings, and photographs. Also included are three of Sobers's track medals from 1945.

Biographical / Historical

Mary DeSaussure Sobers, a track runner from the Brooklyn neighborhood of Bedford-Stuyvesant, became the first African American female to run in a sanctioned track meet when she participated in the Olympic Carnival, sponsored by the New York City Department of Parks, in 1945. She went on to have a successful track career and later became a coach and adviser to the Queens Trailblazers Track Club.
