Abstract
These papers are comprised of items belonging to Henry Nagel, a resident of Brooklyn, New York, who was employed as Controller for Chase National Bank. These papers include Henry Nagel's personal documents and business correspondence. These papers also include items related to New York University, Packer Collegiate Institute, the United States Treasury War Finance Commission, and the New York Veteran Police Association. An avid basketball fan, Henry Nagel's papers include newspaper clippings related to the Crescent basketball team of St. Thomas Episcopal Church.
Biographical Note
Henry Nagel (1883-1964) was a bank controller and life-long Brooklyn, New York, resident. He had a long and successful career at Chase Bank and its predecessor institutions. He married Caroline Newell on October 7, 1908. Their only child, Winifred Gladys Nagel Pitt, was born on July 5, 1912. His banking career began in 1904 after his graduation from Boy's High School, in the Bedford–Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn. In the mid-1920s, he briefly worked at Chase Bank's Paris branch. He was also a basketball player in his youth, and avidly followed the Crescent basketball team at his church, St. Thomas Episcopal Church.
Scope and Contents
These papers are comprised of items belonging to Henry Nagel, a resident of Brooklyn, New York, and the Controller for Chase National Bank. These items range in date from 1897 to 1964. His personal documents include his marriage and death certificates, travel photographs and ephemera, a school certificate from Public School 73 (located at the corner of Macdougal Street and Rockaway Avenue, in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Bedford-Stuyvesant), and a syllabus for a business class from New York University. His passport photograph and a postcard from the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in France are also included. An avid basketball fan, Henry Nagel collected newspaper clippings related to the Crescent basketball team of St. Thomas Episcopal Church. His business career is represented by his correspondence and business cards. These papers also include a certificate of appreciation from the United States Treasury War Finance Commission and an honorary membership pin and card from the New York Veteran Police Association.
The papers also include items relating to Henry Nagel's daughter, Winifred Gladys Nagel Pitt. These primarily relate to her marriage to Frank R. Pitt in 1937. They also include several items relating to Packer Collegiate Institute, where she attended school, including: Supplementary Reading for the Academic and Collegiate Schools booklet (1922), Class Day program (1931), the Annual Sermon to the Graduating Class (1931), clippings, photographs, and an address titled "Bender of the Twig" by school President Paul D. Schafer (1939).
