Abstract

The images were included in When Brooklyn Was the World by Elliot Willensky, originally published by Crown Publishers in 1986. Images of buildings, people, transportation, neighborhoods, public events, recreation, and parks are included in the collection, as are images of Coney Island, and the New York Naval Shipyard (now the Brooklyn Navy Yard), among others.

Crown Publishers is a New York City-based publishing company that was established in 1933. In 1986, under its imprint Harmony Books, Crown Publishers, published When Brooklyn Was the World by Elliot Willensky. In 1988, Crown Publishing Group, whose imprints included Crown Publishers, Clarkson Potter, Inc., Harmony Books, and the Outlet Book Company Publishers, was then acquired by Random House, who in turn, was acquired by Bertelsmann AG, a media company based in Germany, in 1998.

The Crown Publishers photographs of Brooklyn is comprised of 82 black-and-white photographic prints that document Brooklyn from the period circa 1920 to 1960. The images were included in When Brooklyn Was the World by Elliot Willensky, originally published by Crown Publishers in 1986. Images of buildings, people, transportation, neighborhoods, public events, recreation, and parks are included in the collection, as are images of Coney Island, and the New York Naval Shipyard (now the Brooklyn Navy Yard), among others.
