Abstract

The collection is composed primarily of cabinet cards, with larger mounted photographs included. Studio portraits show individual men, women, and children, as well as groups. All portraits in the collection originate from commercial portrait studios in Brooklyn, N.Y. and/or depict individuals from or resident in Brooklyn.

Scope and Contents

The Brooklyn studio portrait collection dates from circa 1875 to 1899 and contains 28 items. The collection is composed primarily of cabinet cards, with larger mounted photographs included. Studio portraits show individual men, women, and children, as well as groups.

The following portrait studios are represented in the collection: Stevenson, N. Augarten, The Duryea, A. Werner, Harry Kopke, H.G. Borgfeldt, Ehm, Henry Holler and Company, Williamsburg Photo Company, Stoffregen, W. Burghardt, Bring's Studio, Fulton Art Studio, Carbonette, and Jeannette Studio.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Portions of this collection were purchased from Xerxes Fine Books and Documents, 1986. The portrait of Mrs. Balcom was a transfer from the Historical Society of Frederick County, 2002. The portraits from accession 2022.025 were the gift of Shelley Cardiel, 2020. The portrait of a family on a train to the Rockaways was the gift of Marsha Kenny, 2021. The portrait of the Hays and McLaughlin girls was the gift of Cathleen C. Cody, 2021.
