Abstract

The Photographs of McEnery's wall sign in Midwood contains two color photographic prints taken by Jessica Schneider showing a painted advertisement for McEnery's, a Brooklyn-based furniture, upholstery, and carpeting business. The photographs were taken in August 1988. The building on which the advertisement was painted was located on the southeast corner of Avenue J and Coney Island Avenue in the Midwood neighborhood of Brooklyn.

Biographical note

James McEnery was born in Ireland and immigrated to the United States as a young man. He started the Brooklyn-based furniture business, McEnery's, and served as president of the company for over 40 years. McEnery was married and had seven children. Two of his sons, James and J. P. McEnery, were also associated with the business. At the time of McEnery's death, circa 1917, the business was located at 86-90 Myrtle Avenue in the present-day neighborhood of Downtown Brooklyn.
