Abstract
The collection primarily documents the family life of William Riola and Sara Hewitt Riola from the time of their marriage in Brooklyn in 1935 through their 40th wedding anniversary. The bulk of the collection documents the period of time when William and Sara Riola, and their three young sons, Peter, William ("Billy'), and Richard, lived in the Prospect Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn during the 1930s and 1940s. Street views of St. John's Place near Underhill Avenue showing the Riola family posing for photographs or the children at play are included.
Biographical note
Sara Hewitt Riola was born and raised in Brooklyn. Her great-grandfather was Charles Gardner Coffin, a sea captan, who served in this capacity during the American Civil War for the Union Army. Her grandparents, Eliza Coffin Hewitt and William Ralston Hewitt, had at least two children, Ralston Coffin Hewitt and Louise Hewitt. Sara Hewitt's parents were Ralston Coffin Hewitt and Frances May Mann Hewitt who married in 1915. Sara Hewitt married William Riola in 1935 in Brooklyn. They had three sons; Peter, William ("Billy"), and Richard. The Hewitt family lived in the Prospect Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn in the 1930s and 1940s. They left Brooklyn in the late 1960s to early 1970s and moved to New Jersey.
Scope and Contents
The Hewitt and Riola families photographs consist of 20 black-and-white photographic prints and one color photographic print relating to both the Hewitt family and Riola family of Brooklyn, circa 1918 to 1975. The collection primarily documents the family life of William Riola and Sara Hewitt Riola from the time of their marriage in Brooklyn in 1935 through their 40th wedding anniversary.
