Scope and Content Note

The Black Sun Archive is a part of the Avant Garde Collection at Fales Library, New York University. The Fales Library is the primary special collections division of the NYU libraries, housing over 170,000 volumes of English and American literature from 1700 to the present. Strengths of the collection include the development of the English and American novel, with an emphasis on the Gothic and the Victorian novel. The Avant Garde Collection comprises printed materials, archives, and other materials related to the avant-garde writing from the 1960s and early 1970s. The collection was built during that period by curators, including Mel Edelstein and Ted Grieder.

The collection consists of correspondence, typescripts and leaflets. The majority of the correspondence, which is in the form of letters, postcards and invitations, is from many notable poets to the editor of Black Sun, Harvey Tucker. Amongst the noteworthy correspondents are: Hugh Fox, Ben Hiatt, Duane Locke, Richard Morris, Barbara Holland, David Antin, Elizabeth Ritchie, and Alice Ransom. The typescripts include those for publication in Volume 1, No. 1 through Volume 2, No. 3. In addition, there are typescripts of the writings of Harvey Tucker, editor of the magazine.
