Knox Burger is an editor, writer and journalist living in New York City. While serving in World War II, Burger contributed
to Yank, and then after the war to such publications as: Collier's. He then moved on to editing for Dell and Fawcett Publications. In 1970, he founded Knox Burger and Associates, a literary
agency which later merged with the Harold Ober agency. The collection consists of Burger's correspondence from the late 1960's
through 2000.

Historical/Biographical Note:
As submitted by Mr. Burger:
In college, I was the editor of the Cornell Widow fall 1942, spring 1943. Left college April '43 to join army. In the service, I contributed freelance reportage, fiction
and humor to Yank, the Army Weekly 1943-44. While serving with a B-29 bomb squadron in the Marianas, I covered a number of missions over Japan,
and was transferred to the Yank Saipan bureau late summer 1945 just before the Japanese surrender. I moved north to Tokyo, where I was, for a few months,
the editor of the Far East edition of Yank, and wrote numerous stories about the occupation.
After the war, I did a brief stint at the Harvard graduate school, selling occasional fiction and articles to national magazines.
In 1947, I was hired by Collier's (one of our leading defunct magazines), and became its fiction editor in 1948. In 1951, I left Collier's to edit books - mostly suspense novels - for Dell. I did this for 9 years, and spent 1960-1970 doing the same thing for
Fawcett Publications. Among the writers I worked with during those 20 years were Kurt Vonnegut, John D. MacDonald, John Steinbeck,
Ray Bradbury, Jack Finney, Horace McCoy, Walter Tevis, MacKinlay Kantor, Morris West and Louis L'Amour. A motley crew.
In April, 1970, I established, in partnership with my wife, Kitty Sprague, a literary agency (Knox Burger Associates), setting
up in the basement of the brownstone on Washington Square in which we lived. In the spring of 2000, I merged my agency with
the Harold Ober agency.

Scope and Content Note
The Knox Burger Archive is a part of the Fales Library, New York University. The Fales Library is the primary special collections
division of the NYU libraries, housing nearly 200,000 volumes of English and American literature from 1700 to the present.
Strengths of the collection include the development of the English and American novel, with an emphasis on the Gothic and
the Victorian novel.
The Knox Burger Archive is comprised of the correspondence and manuscripts of many notable literary figures, as well as reviews
of their literary works. Burger's original organization of his papers was preserved as much as possible.
SERIES DESCRIPTION
The collection includes 6 boxes in one series of original and carbon copy typewritten manuscripts of Burger's correspondence
with writers he represented, contracts, and reviews of their work from various periodicals. Items in the archive are arranged
alphabetically by personal name.
