Abstract

Alexander Lipsky was an influential teacher and composer, born in Poland in 1901. He was a student of Frank E. Ward and Leonid Kreutzer. His student, Carol Moore, is also represented in the collection. The collection is comprised of scores annotated by Lipsky and Moore, and show detailed fingerings and pedalings.

Biographical Note:

Alexander Lipsky was an influential teacher as well as composer and arranger born in Poland in 1901. He attended Columbia University and studied composition and theory with Daniel Gregory Mason, Frank Ward and Franz Schreker. He was a student of piano under the tutelage of Leonid Kreutzer. In 1921, he was awarded the Clarence Barker Fellowship at Columbia through which he studied in Berlin from 1922-1924. Up through the 1940's, he composed concertos, songs, sonatas and pieces for piano. He also became a highly regarded teacher of music, and one of his students was Carol Moore Klooster.

Scope and Content Note

The Brody Klooster Performance Practice Collection is an archive of musical scores from the personal library of Carol Moore. The collection is comprised mostly of scores that have been annotated by Moore's teacher, Alexander Lipsky, but there is also material in series II that was annotated by Moore.

SERIES DESCRIPTION

Series I: Alexander Lipsky

Series I contains 3.25 boxes of musical scores and inventory notes belonging to Alexander Lipsky, which are then divided into two subseries. They are arranged alphabetically by composer.

Missing Title

  1. Series I, subseries A contains 3 boxes of musical scores annotated by and/or belonging to Alexander Lispky.
  2. Series I, subseries B contain one-quarter box of practice books and inventory notes.

Series II: Carol Moore

Series 2 contains three-quarters of a box of musical scores that were either annotated by Moore, or taken from her library. The series is divided into two subseries and arranged alphabetically by composer.

Missing Title

  1. Series II, subseries A contains one-quarter box of musical scores annotated by Carol Moore.
  2. Series II, subseries B contains half box of musical scores from Carol Moore's library.

Oversize: A flat oversize box at the end of the collection contains oversize material from Series 1 and 2.

Provenance

The Brody Klooster Performance Practice Collection was acquired during 1997 through the generous contribution made by David Silverberg and the Estate of Carol Klooster Moore, as a memorial to Mr. Siverberg's late wife, Elaine Brody, an alumna and distinguished professor at NYU.
