June 27-July 11: HMA motored with her brother Guy Mitchell to Fiuggi (visited Subiaco), and returned via Roma and Siena.
July 31- August 6: HMA motors north with AA, intending to leave Milano on August 5 to join HA and WA in England. Bologna, Modena, Carpi, Mantova, Verona, Vicenza, Padova. On August 2 in Venezia: on a post card of the XI Esposizione Internazionale d'Arte in Venice: "War declared - all countries hastily preparing. Italy to remain neutral as long as possible - but nothing may be exported. Guy [her brother Guy Mitchell] telegraphed from Germany for 2000 marks - his motor may be sequestered there. … not children in England Harold to stay there. I should not leave Italy but go …… war ships busy taking … etc. and sailors with their …going out to ships". On August 4 leaves Venezia for Padova, Vicenza, Verona, Brescia, and Bergamo. On August 5 in Milano "found letters….Guy safe in Switzerland - impossible go Aug….officers with passports cannot be sure of arriving … War spirit keen. I am anxious to get home. Lack of resolution if … wants to join war - government insists on neutrality. About 3.30 motored to [Urio]…to see Mrs [McCreery's] place - she in … so … had to spend night in Milan."
On August 6 from Milano via Modena and Abetone home to Firenze. "Great excitement over war at home. Guy lost motor…".

General note

A travel scrapbook and journal compiled by HMA. Most of the postcards are pasted onto the page, but some, with correspondence are inserted into corner slits. Some loose scraps of paper with notes by HMA help to confirm the chronology. There are loose postcards at the end of the album, and many pages were left blank.
1906: September 28 - the Cabin Passenger list of the 'Kaiser Wilhelm II' which sailed from New York, US for Bremen via Plymouth and Cherbourg shows the Acton family (AA, HMA, HA, and WA) with nurse and maid in the 'First Cabin'.

Two of the postcards with correspondence removed to the paper archives were of particular interest: one to AA and HMA from HA at the Hotel Excelsior in Venezia, 1912, and one to 'Mrs Acton' at Palazzo Guadagni, 9 Viale Principe Umberto, Firenze dated October 31 1903 from her brother Guy Mitchell.

A damaged album with many loose pages, and many loose postcards. Annotated on the first page "1 best album 1913. Begun in 1910". Many of the postcards annotated on the verso from HMA to HA.
The postcards include: picture postcards (one dated 7 April 1913), and another annotated "Happy New Year from Elizabeth C. [Mitchell]" and dated Paris 1907); the interior of the Blackstone Hotel, Chicago the Chinese in Hongkong Egypt (one addressed to WA at La Pietra and dated January 28th 1911); Japan; Sumatra; the Chinese community in San Francisco Mexican street scenes; Grand Hotel Tirano (annotated on the recto "where we lunched July 19th 1916".
There are also childrens' drawings (mostly of women) and one photograph of a baby in a swing (annotated on the verso "8 months…deep blue eyes".
Two postcards with correspondence from HMA to HA removed to the paper archives (one from France dated 7 April 1913).
