Abstract

Richard Lipton (d. 1992), also known as Dick Lipton, was a actor and director in New York City. Lipton graduated with a BS from Drexel Institute of Technology and attended graduate school at Ohio University and the Actor's Workshop at the New School. He performed in and directed numerous plays at local downtown theaters including the Judson Poets Theater at Judson Memorial Church on Washington Square. This collection documents Lipton's career as an actor and director in the downtown theater scene in New York City during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Materials include one audiocassette, one audio reel, and one leather bound portfolio containing clippings, photographs, flyers, resumes, programs, sheet music, song lyrics, and a personal address book.

Biographical Note

Richard Lipton (d. 1992) was an actor and director in New York City. Lipton, who also went by Dick Lipton, graduated with a BS from Drexel Institute of Technology and attended graduate school at Ohio University. He also attended the Actor's Workshop at the New School in New York City. Lipton performed in and directed numerous plays at local downtown theaters including Adler Theater, Martinique Theater, Old Reliable Theater, and the Judson Poets Theater at Judson Memorial Church on Washington Square. Lipton also attempted to bring the play, "The Faggot," to a bigger theater on Broadway, but was unsuccessful. Lipton died of AIDS in 1992.

Scope and Contents

This collection documents Lipton's career as an actor and director in the downtown theater scene in New York City. Materials include audio recordings of performances that were collected by the donor, Jane Heil, a close friend of Lipton's, and Lipton's portfolio that was assembled in the late 1960s. Materials in the portfolio include photographs of Lipton's performances including "John Brown's Body," "Dumb Waiter," "Barfoot in the Park," "Luther," "As You Like It," "The Sea Gull," and "With Music by the Bird." There are numerous reviews of plays Lipton acted in and directed, including "Big Bang." The portfolio also contains copies of Lipton's resume and head shots; sheet music from "Try to Remember" and "Stop the World – I Want to Get Off;" song lyrics; a personal address book; and numerous flyers and programs for plays Lipton acted in and directed including Robert Patrick's "Fog," "The Triumph of Robert Emmet," and "Gorilla Queen." Off Broadway and downtown theaters of note documented in the collection are the Judson's Poet's Theater and the Martinique Theater.

Processing Information

Materials were taken out of the leather bound portfolio and placed in new acid-free folders in original order. The audiocassette and audio reel were placed in shared media boxes and the information was indicated on media separatoin sheets.
