Abstract

Barbara Benary is an American ethnomusicologist and composer specializing in Indonesian and Indian music. She is a co-founder and artistic director in the downtown New York based composer's collective and repertory ensemble Gamelan Son of Lion, who have been active since 1976. The Barbara Benary Collection on Gamelan Son of Lion consists of promotional flyers, posters, organizational records and performance programs by and related to Gamelan Son of Lion from 1975 to 2015.

Biographical Note

Barbara Benary (1946- ) is an American composer and ethnomusicologist specializing in Indonesian and Indian music. She is a co-founding member and artistic director of the downtown New York based new-music composer's collective and repertory ensemble Gamelan Son of Lion, who have been active since 1976. Benary composes music and is responsible for constructing most of the instruments used in the performances and recordings of Gamelan Son of Lion. She holds a B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College, and a Ph.D. from Wesleyan University. She has taught ethnomusicology at Rutgers University.

Scope and Contents

The Barbara Benary Collection on Gamelan Son of Lion consists of materials documenting and promoting the performances of downtown New York based composer's collective and repertory ensemble Gamelan Son of Lion, of which Benary was a founding member. This collection consists of promotional flyers, posters, organizational records and performance programs of Gamelan Son of Lion from 1975 to 2015, primarily in New York.
