Abstract

The American Theater for Poets was founded in 1961 by Diana diPrima, James Waring, Leroi Jones (Amiri Baraka) Fred Herko, and Alan Marlowe. The intention of the theater was to support different artistic media and visions in an experimental setting. This collection contains scripts and programs for the American Theater for Poets.

Historical Note

The American Theater for Poets was founded in 1961 by Diana diPrima, James Waring, Leroi Jones (Amiri Baraka) Fred Herko, and Alan Marlowe. It was originally called the New York Poet's Theater. The theater was incorporated in 1962 and ran for four years. The intention of the theater was to support different artistic media and visions in an experimental setting. During its tenure, the American Theater for Poets presented plays, music, art showings, poetry readings, dance, and other performance art.
