Scope and Content Note

This collection documents the history and administration of the 7th Regiment of New York. The bulk of the material pertains to regimental management, organization, and events, rather than its participation in combat and other military activities. Items include orders, correspondence, financial and legal records, reports, by-laws, enlistment records, and rosters from 7th Regiment headquarters and companies. Also included is material relating to the regiment's armories (especially the Park Ave. and 66th St. location), veterans' organizations, music, athletic clubs, recreational activities, and entertainment. The collection contains numerous scrapbooks, visual materials, publications, artifacts, and ephemera.

Material documenting the regiment's military service includes reports and rosters from the Depot (Home) Battalion, 7th Infantry who defended the Pleasantville, NY aqueduct in 1917. Items relating to World War I can be found in Company F's files in Series II, including orders, memos, bulletins, and schedules. World War I Ephemera in Series IX contains instructional, promotional and recruitment material. In addition, numerous WWI posters are located in Visual Materials. The collection also contains correspondence, personnel, publications, clippings, visual materials, and a scrapbook pertaining to the 7th Regiment's service on the Mexican border, while stationed at McAllen, Texas in 1916.

Other military documentation includes a brief account of the regiment's participation in quelling the Astor Place Riots, scrapbooks relating to 1909 and 1912 war game maneuvers, and visual materials depicting camp life. Material on military training and instruction can be found in the headquarters and Francis Landon series. Few items relate to the Civil War, other than enrollment lists found in Personnel (Series I) and a number of photographs and photo albums in Visual Materials. There is little or no material regarding the 7th Regiment's participation in suppressing the 1863 Draft Riots.

Throughout its history, the 7th Regiment's military designation changed several times (see historical note). Folder titles reflect the various identities of the regiment, when applicable. The arrangement of the 7th Regiment Records partially follows military entities, particularly headquarters and company material. Items from military levels higher than regiment, such as division or brigade, can be found in the headquarters series.

Subseries 2: Correspondence, 1819-1951

Scope and Contents note:

The regimental correspondence is arranged chronologically. It is mostly incoming correspondence to the regiment, but some copies and carbon copies of outgoing correspondence are included. Some letters to the Board of Officers and correspondence among soldiers and officials of the 7th Regiment are also included. Most of the correspondence documents routine matters such as invitations to dinners and events, resignations, elections of officers, parades, uniforms, and the use of the armory. Events such as the Astor Place Riots, the Draft Riots, the Civil War, and World War I are not represented in the correspondence. However, some letters from 1916 from McAllen, Texas detail the camp conditions and the attitude of the men while guarding the Mexican Border.

The letterbooks contain the correspondence of Colonel Appleton and Colonel Clark which detail the administrative management of the regiment. The letterbook of Philip Rhinelander contains correspondence regarding his collecting of Civil War relics.

Series II: Companies, 1806-1949

Scope and Contents note:

This series contains material directly related to the companies of the 7th Regiment. Material includes rosters and roll books, orders, resolutions, by-laws, enlistment records, correspondence, memos, reports, financial records, circulars, record books, minutes, notices, and a few photographs. The bulk of the material is for companies B and F.

Major portions of this series include approximately two boxes of enlistment records, especially for Co. B, (1939-1949), which contain basic biographic information, and sometimes health information, for 7th members and potential members. Co. F. material includes the company's World War I files: orders, memos, bulletins, and schedules that discuss appointments, inspection instructions, health matters, marching and behavioral discipline, food, postal regulations, enforcement of attire regulations, and various procedures.

Note: the 7th Regiment initially designated companies by number, not letter. This practice continued even after the letter system was instituted; therefore, for example, Co. B and 2nd Company are the same. There is no Company J.

For other material relating to 7th Regiment companies, see rosters [c1942-1947] in the Veterans of the 7th Regiment files, Series I (Subseries 10). See also Series IX for ephemera (bulk Co. B), and Series XIV: Visual Materials for oversized items and photo albums relating to companies.

Series IV: Francis D. Landon, 1908-1918

Scope and Contents note:

Francis G. Landon (1859-1947) was a politician from New York City. He joined the 7th Regiment as a private, rose through the ranks and was promoted to Major. During the period ca.1912 to ca.1916, he was involved in the education of military officers, initially as a student, but later, apparently, as an instructor. Following the United States' declaration of war against Germany in 1917, Landon served as Morale Officer at Camp Merritt, NJ. This series consists of material that Landon accumulated primarily during these two stages of his career. The series is divided into three principal subseries. These are: General Correspondence, Military Education, and Camp Merritt, NJ.

Subseries 1: General Correspondence, 1909-1915

Scope and Contents note:

The General Correspondence subseries consists of personal letters to Landon and his retained copies of his replies. Letters received by Landon are arranged chronologically in a folder titled General Correspondence - Letters Received. Landon's replies are arranged alphabetically, with one folder for each recipient of Landon's letters. The letters concern two subjects: the study of military history and a proposed program of rifle practice in colleges.

Subseries 2: Military Education, 1912-1917

Scope and Contents note:

Material in the Military Education subseries consists primarily of small booklets of problem-solving exercises for military officers. These booklets were published by the Army Service Schools, where Landon attended classes during the academic year 1913 - 1914, and perhaps at other times. For purposes of the arrangement of this series, these booklets are referred to as Map Problems, the genre name applied to most of the booklets. In those instances that Landon kept a map with the booklet, they are housed together. Otherwise, maps are housed separately. Also included in this subseries are Landon's solutions to some of the Map Problems, evidently composed as course work, and some problems that appear to have been composed by Landon, perhaps for courses that he taught. This material is arranged according to the particular school that issued it, or, if no specific school is identified, the course to which it pertains. If no school or course is specified, the folder title indicates only the type of material found within it.

Landon appears to have taught at least one course in military tactics. Some material in the collection appears to be lecture notes or typewritten handouts that accompanied lectures. It some cases, it is unclear whether these notes and handouts are from lectures that Landon attended, or whether he composed them for lectures that he delivered. Some notes and typescripts pertaining to Landon's military education at Fort Leavenworth are identified as such.

Subseries 3: Camp Merritt, 1918-1919

Scope and Contents note:

The Camp Merritt, NJ subseries contains, for the most part, material created by or relating to the Morale Office at that facility. A small portion of the material in the subseries concerns the Camp in general, and is not specific to the Morale Office. Included is correspondence to and from the Morale Office. Note that this folder group is distinct from the General Correspondence subseries, and includes material addressed to other offices on Camp Merritt, but routed to and answered by the Morale Office. Letters received by the Morale Office are arranged chronologically in a folder titled Morale Office - Letters Received. Retained copies of the Morale Office's replies are arranged in folders by the name of the letter's recipient. Subjects include: programs to maintain the morale of soldiers stationed at Camp Merritt (e.g. sporting events, Christmas decorations, 4th of July fireworks, etc.); commemorative medals for the schoolchildren of Bergen County, NJ, to be paid for by the personnel of the Camp; and weekly reports to the war Department on the state of the soldiers' morale.
