Abstract

53 photomechanical prints showing both interior and exterior views of buildings in New York City designed by Emery Roth.

Biographical Note

Emery Roth (1871-1948) worked as an architect in New York City under his own name from 1898 to 1938, and after 1938 worked with his two sons as Emery Roth & Sons. Roth was a specialist in the field of apartment house design. He designed many notable and fashionable New York residential buildings including the San Remo apartment house, the Oliver Cromwell, Dorset, and Drake apartment hotels, the Ritz Tower, and the St. Moritz hotel.

Arrangement

Prints are arranged by type of building shown.

Scope and Contents

The Emery Roth Architectural Print Collection spans the period from 1926-1947 and contains 53 prints showing both interior and exterior views of buildings designed by Emery Roth. Most are half-tone prints from photographs, several are reproduced from presentation drawings or renderings. Most are attributed to "Emery Roth, architect," but a few date from after 1938 and are by "Emery Roth & Sons, architects." The collection is arranged by type of building.

Buildings shown are mainly apartment houses and hotels, with a few religious facilities and office buildings. Few of the prints have dates, but those from photographs are all post construction. Many of the buildings shown here were completed in the second half of the 1920s.
