Erasmus Hall Academy—Architect

Container 1 Container 2   Title Date
Offsite-Box: RC-1 Folder : Erasmus Hall Academy—History [Letter from William Hindley to John F. McNeill regarding supposed architect of Erasmus Hall Academy building]

Scope and Contents

When the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) prepared its report on Erasmus Hall Academy, c. 1940, it attributed the structure to Major Pierre C. L'Enfant, remembered as the designer of Washington, D.C. This attribution is followed by Alan Burnham in New York Landmarks (Middletown, Conn.: Wesleyan U. Press, 1963), p. 377.

The compiler of this catalogue has found no contemporary record of Major L'Enfant's role in the design of Erasmus Hall Academy. The source of this attribution may have been one William Hindley, who wrote to Dr. John F. McNeill, the school's principal, in 1938, in an effort to convince McNeill that L'Enfant was indeed the school's architect, despite the admitted absence of "a written proof from that period; or a tradition—a manuscript—document—letter . . ." The tone of Hindley's letter suggests an obsession and eccentricity that would undermine one's belief in Hindley's credibility. Yet, the closeness in time of Hindley's letter to the preparation of the HABS report indicates that this letter may have influenced the attribution. Hindley's letter can be found in: Box: RC-1, folder: Erasmus Hall Academy—History.

Erasmus Hall High School—Museum

Scope and Contents

The designation "Erasmus Hall Museum" has been applied to two different places within the School: first, to the Museum Room of the Library located on the fourth floor of the Snyder Avenue wing (1940); and second, to the Museum Room in the original Academy building, opened upon its restoration in 1952.

The Museum Room in the Library consisted of glass-enclosed bookcases containing what remained of the original Erasmus Hall Academy library and the library of the old Flatbush Public School No. 1, as well as special and rare books donated by alumni and friends of the school. Additional information about these books and the library are found under:

The Museum Room in the old Academy building contained various artifacts, antiques, and items of memorabilia relating to the school and to the old families of Flatbush. For additional information, see other entries under:

Literary and Philosophical Association of Flatbush

Container 1 Container 2   Title Date
Offsite-Box: RC-1 Folder : Minutes of the Literary & Philosophical Association of Flatbush, 1836–1838 Constitution and minutes of the Literary and Philosophical Association of Flatbush

Scope and Contents

6 ½ x 8" notebook with marbled covers containing the constitution and minutes of the Literary and Philosophical Association of Flatbush. The minutes run from May 1836 to Feb. 1838.

This was an adult organization, and [at] each meeting a member would give a discourse on some assigned topic. Dr. John B. Zabriskie was an active member of this Literary Association, and mention of it appears in Historical Sketch of the Zabriskie Homestead by P. L. Schenck (1881), p. 55–56. Why these minutes cease in 1838 is a puzzle, since the Association was still active during the winter of 1841–1842, at which time Dr. Thomas M. Strong delivered the series of lectures that was later published as the first history of Flatbush (1842). These minutes were written by Dr. John B. Zabriskie (comparison made with letter on file in Zabriskie Papers, Box 2).

Offsite-Box: RC-6a Folder : Rev. Dr. John H. Livingston [Letter and engraving]

Scope and Contents

Original one-page holograph letter to "Reverend Mr. Peter Lowe, Flat-Bush, Long Island, New York," written from "N. Brunswick, Oct. 2, 1813" by the Rev. John H. Livingston, D.D. Signed simply "J. H. Livingston."

His purpose in writing to Rev. Lowe, who at that time was Principal of the Academy, was to secure a teaching position for a friend's son. (If we may judge by the list of teachers in the Chronicles, young Isaac S. Brouwer did not receive an appointment.) This letter has added significance because Rev. Lowe endorsed this letter in his own hand: "Rev. Doct. Livingston, Oct. 2, 1813, P. L."

Accompanied by engraving of Dr. Livingston which was probably removed from a copy of Gunn's Memoirs of Dr. Livingston (of which EHHS Library has three copies).

According to notation on manila folder, this letter was a gift of Dr. Charles Lauriston Livingston Jr., May 12, 1952.

Box: [unknown] Dutch tile with picture of bird and decorative border [NOT PRESENT]

Scope and Contents

Dutch tile, about 4 ½ x 4 ½", with picture of bird and decorative border. n.d., but probably 18th century, first half.

Recorded as being in Drawer 10.

[1700–1750]
Offsite-Box: RC-10c Frame : Wooden frame holding 10 tiles Ten Dutch tiles depicting Biblical scenes

Scope and Contents

Ten original Dutch tiles, each about 5 x 5", depicting Biblical scenes; framed.

There is some question as to the provenance of these tiles. According to an article appearing in the school newspaper, The Dutchman, Apr. 3, 1936 (filed in folder marked "Fireplace," Records Case, Drawer 6), these tiles originally graced the fireplace of Erasmus Hall Academy, installed in 1787. However, there is good reason to believe that these tiles actually came from the fireplace in the old Zabriskie homestead which stood for almost 200 years on the northwest corner of Flatbush and Church Avenues, Brooklyn, until its demolition in 1877. The wooden frame is stamped in the lower right corner: "J.L.Z. 12.VI.1896." This is undoubtedly Reverend Jeremiah Lott Zabriskie (b. 1835) of Flatbush, who, according to Flatbush of To-Day (issued by All Souls Universalist Church, 1908, p. 141), owned the original tiles from the Zabriskie homestead, which were described as depicting events in Biblical history. He had apparently imbedded some of the tiles in the fireplace of his own home in 1886, where they remained in 1908; but these tiles framed in 1896 were undoubtedly also from the Zabriskie homestead.

Further corroboration for this belief is found in the fact that many Zabriskie family heirlooms were donated to Erasmus Hall High School by Miss Louise Garvin Zabriskie. Among these are two wooden canisters made from beams in the old Zabriskie homestead, one of which bears the stamped inscription "J.L.Z. 1902." So it appears that Rev. Zabriskie was engaged in producing "souvenirs" of the old homestead for display, and embellishing them with his initials.

Zabriskie Family

Scope and Contents

Miss Louise Garvin Zabriskie apparently gave her collection of family papers to the EHHS Library about 1930, as it was soon before Mary A. Kingsbury's retirement in 1931. In a letter to Ella Suydam, July 8, 1934 (filed in Mary A. Kingsbury's folder, Records Case, Drawer 5), Miss Kingsbury wrote: "Did you find the papers that Miss Zabriskie left with us in that nice case? The last I knew of them, Mr. Mullen took the case and said he would take care of it. I do hope the papers are all right for my conscience has accused me many times of not keeping them in the library as she expected us to do. The trouble was that there didn't seem to be a place to spare even for that small case . . . ."

The papers are preserved in the Erasmus Hall archives, though not as a unit.
