Abstract

Approximately 417 black-and-white photographs of New York City (Manhattan and Brooklyn), Washington, D.C., and California, showing storefronts, advertisements, street scenes, pedestrians, urban "still lifes," parks, beaches, and driftwood. A portion of the collection documents protests—largely anti-Vietnam War demonstrations—in Manhattan and Washington, D.C.

Arrangement

Only one image in the Jerry A. Gardner Collection bears an identifying title supplied by the photographer—Belvedere Castle in Central Park (see Box 3, Folder 5). As none of the other photographs is identified or titled, they have been grouped in topical categories devised by the archivist.

Scope and Contents

The collection contains about 417 black-and-white photographic prints of images taken by Jerry A. Gardner in New York City, Washington, D.C., and California, during the 1960s and early 1970s. Many prints are duplicates in various sizes, ranging from approximately 5 x 6 to 16 x 20 inches. Gardner's New York City subject matter includes Manhattan street scenes that generally emphasize grungy storefronts or advertisements; pedestrians; casual "still lifes" with cars, garbage cans, detritus, etc.; parks—notably Central Park and Washington Square Park; and attractions at Coney Island, Brooklyn. A number of photographs show beaches and driftwood; these were likely taken in California, but are not obviously identifiable. And a significant portion of the collection captures anti-Vietnam War protests and police presence in Manhattan, Washington, D.C., and unidentified locations that might be either place.
