Abstract

The collection holds 45 original pencil and wash on paper cartoon drawings by Alfred F. Rilton, created for Irving Trust Company of New York. The cartoons relate to marketing campaigns for thrift account openings, sales incentive campaigns, graphics for employee bowling league events, and depictions, possibly for employee newsletters, of humorous commentary on company matters.

Biographical / Historical

Alfred F. Rilton created the drawings in this collection for The Irving Trust Company at One Wall Street in New York City, where he worked in the advertising department from the 1930s until his retirement in 1965.

Scope and Contents

The collection holds 45 original pencil and wash on paper cartoon drawings by Alfred F. Rilton, created for Irving Trust Company. The cartoons relate to marketing campaigns for thrift account openings, sales incentive campaigns, graphics for employee bowling league events, cartoons possibly for employee newsletters as they depict humorous commentary on company matters, and other such cartoons. Women in the workplace are included in many of the drawings.

Most of the drawings are undated; those that are dated range from the late 1930s-1940s. The largest of the drawings measure about 20 x 15 inches; the bulk are smaller.
