Abstract

The Information Systems Group was created by Time Inc. to plan and oversee use of computer and data processing resources by employees of the company. The collection consists of studies on the creation of a corporate data center and personnel/payroll computer systems, history of the data center, and manuals for the use of computer services offered by the Group.

Biographical / Historical

Information Systems was created by Time Inc. in 1980 to oversee information management systems, make long-term plans for the use of computer resources, and consult with management about data processing needs. It also offered classes on computer use to Time Inc. employees. The increasing use of digital computer technology had a significant effect on editorial operations. Instead of sending stories to a Wire Room reporters began to be able to file stories directly through a dial-up system. In 1981 the Data Center was moved from the Time-Life building to its own facility in the Meadowlands of New Jersey. In 1984 a personnel/payroll computer system called Personnel Information System and Comptroller's Employee payroll and benefits System (PISCES) was created by the Group.
