Abstract

The Center for Urban Environmental Studies (CUES) was an interdisciplinary program established at the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn (now NYU-Poly) in 1967. In the 1970s, there were plans for CUES to construct a Fire Research Center in the Jay Street Firehouse. These records contain correspondence, receipts, brochures, newsletters, and articles.

Biographical / Historical

The Center for Urban Environmental Studies (CUES) was established at the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn (now NYU-Poly) in 1967. The program, which drew from many departments within the university, aimed to pool resources and expand interdisciplinary research. As such, CUES covered diverse topics such as transportation systems, pollution control in air, water, and waste, urban planning, building codes, biomedical engineering, flood control, urban sociology, and fire safety. These research projects were sponsored by government, industry, and private funding.

Directors of program included John G. Duba (then department head of Civil Engineering) and Paul R. DeCicco. DeCicco was the guiding force behind the attempt to convert the historic Jay Street Firehouse into a Fire Research Center for CUES.

CUES has not been listed in the Polytechnic course catalog since 1981.
