Abstract: The RISM Bolivia Project was initiated in 1964 at the request of the U.S. Peace Corps. Headed by Dr. Vera D. Rubin, founder and director of RISM, and Dr. Lambros Comitas, assistant director of RISM, anthropological and epidemiological teams studied six ecologically distinct communities in order to identify major health problems and to assess the implications of rural social organization to facilitate the work of development agencies. The Bolivia Project generated thousands of documents, including correspondence, accounting records, indexed field notes, laboratory processing records, surveys and questionnaires, epidemiological data, maps, photographs, microfiche and microfilm. The collection also includes appended items from an exhibition, Retrospect and Prospect: Preservation and Use of Archival Materials in the Digital Age, which celebrated the Bolivia Project. Appended items include exhibit brochures, information panels, oversized computer generated charts, and video tapes.

Historical Note

In 1964, an intensive three-year medical-anthropological research program in Bolivia was undertaken by RISM at the request of the United States Peace Corps and in cooperation with the Bolivian Ministry of Public Health. The program was conducted under contract with the United States Peace Corps and received significant supplementary support from RISM. The goal of the research was to provide basic information for the development of public health and sanitation programs. Project administration was carried out by RISM director Vera D. Rubin and associate director Lambros Comitas, along with William J. McEwen who served as the project research director and Abdel Omran, who was director of the epidemiological research. The project had two interrelated research objectives: The epidemiological team attempted to define the major problems of health and disease in rural Bolivian communities, taking into account the drastically different ecological regions of the country. The communities surveyed included Villa Abecia, Coroico, Reyes and Sorata, Compi and San Miguel. Clinical studies were conducted on a sample of 3,000 subjects to determine the incidence of tuberculosis and parasitic infections, the major endemic diseases affecting the region, and of nutritional and health status. Simultaneously, the ethnographic team conducted community studies in the same areas to provide background data on social and cultural features with special regard to attitudes toward health and disease and the structure of local institutions in the rural communities. Over eighty medical and social scientists, field workers, nurses, data analysts, and staff in the United States and Bolivia contributed to the project. Quarterly reports describing the work and the course of research were filed with the Peace Corps. Results and analysis were published in two companion volumes: the epidemiological report was published by RISM in 1967, and the ethnographic report was published by RISM in 1969 and in 1971 by Oxford University Press. In addition, a number of articles, reports, theses and doctoral dissertations resulted from the project research.

Series V. Ethnographic Research Records

Scope and Contents note

The materials in this series relate to the ethnographic study undertaken between 1964 and 1967. The final report was published in 1969 as Changing Rural Bolivia. The report was republished in 1971 by Oxford University Press as  Changing Rural Society. The materials have been divided into five subseries.

Subseries A. Household Structure Diagram/Bosquejo de Casa

Scope and Contents

This subseries consists of 122 forms arranged by the name of the head of household. These documents are stored with the Household Administrative Card-Household Sanitation, Tuberculin Surveys, and Laboratory Results in the Epidemiological Research Material. The Household Structure Diagram was used to register information regarding kinship.

Subseries B."Changing Rural Society"

Scope and Contents note

This subseries contains the printed edition, the offset master copy, and preparatory material related to the final report, published as "Changing Rural Bolivia."

Subseries C. Community Census/ Censo de la Comunidad

Scope and Contents

This subseries consists of 161 census forms. This census, undertaken in San Miguel and Sorata, includes the names of the people interviewed, which may also be referenced in the Biographical Index. The census material also includes information about family members, language, education and status in the community.

Subseries D. Community Study Outline (CSO)/ Bosquejo para el estudio de las Communidades

Scope and Contents

This subseries consists of the Community Study Outline (CSO)/Bosquejo para el estudio de las communidades. The CSO is an outline that was used to standardize and index the information recorded in the field notes generated by each anthropologist. The one exception is Compi, where the anthropologists were already present in the community conducting their own research. For Compi, only Biographical Index and Member of Household Number designations exist. These forms document geographic environment, population demographics, history and development, institutional systems, the sociopolitical system, community and private health, and the Peace Corps program.

Scope and Contents

Partly as a result of the RISM Bolivia Project (1964-1967), the United States Office of Education in 1968 and 1969 sponsored a study of rural education in Argentina, Bolivia, and Jamaica. The principal investigator of this study was Lambros Comitas, then Professor of Anthropology and Education at Teachers College, Columbia University, and Associate Director of the Research Institute for the Study of Man.

The Bolivia CV Recordings, an integral part of this comparative study, were taped by Lambros Comitas in 1969 using a Sony Videocorder and CV reel-to-reel videotape for helican scan video recorders.
