Ben Iceland (1910-1990) fought with the Abraham Lincoln Brigade in the Spanish Civil
War. In civilian life he found work as a social worker, farmer and, finally, as a
high-school teacher of Latin. Iceland was an active member of the Veterans of the
Abraham Lincoln Brigade (VALB) and edited VALB’s newsletter,
the Volunteer, for eight years. This collection contains correspondence written while Iceland was
in Spain and memoirs of his participation in the Spanish Civil War. It also contains
correspondence and subject files, most from the 1980s, related to VALB and the Volunteer.
