Abstract

Joseph Isaac Siegel joined the International Brigades in Spain in July 1937. He worked for the British Battalion medical corps and fought with the Lincoln Washington Battalion machine gun company. This collection consists of letters from Siegel while in Spain to his friend and former Harvard classmate, Leo Epstein.

Historical/Biographical Note

Joseph Isaac Siegel attended the Boston Latin School and Harvard University. He joined the International Brigades in Spain in July 1937, where he was initially assigned to the British Battalion in the medical corps as an ambulance driver, first aid worker, and stretcher bearer. Siegel then joined the Lincoln Washington Battalion and fought with the machine gun company on the Aragon front in the fall of 1937, among other battles. Siegel was repatriated to the U.S. in late 1938. He died in 1972.

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists entirely of letters from Siegel while in Spain to his friend and former Harvard classmate, Leo Epstein. Siegel, who signs his letters "Jorg," writes of daily life and personal circumstances, as well as detailed descriptions of battles.
