Scope and Contents

The collection consists of clippings and photocopies of clippings pertaining to the Spanish Civil War and especially to Jewish participation in the War. Among them are many cartoons, photos, and other graphics clipped from a variety of Yiddish-language newspapers and journals, most of them published in the United States. Much of the material dates from the Spanish Civil War era; other items are commemorative or historical in nature. There is a large folder of clippings of cartoons on the Civil War and the fight against fascism by William Gropper (from the Morgen Freiheit), a folder of cartoons by (from Der Tog), and a number of cartoons from other sources. Many of the clippings are pasted on pages from a notebook or scrapbook, apparently compiled ca. 1936-1938. The bulk of the individual clippings are unidentified as to source, and undated, but the pages could be reassembled in chronological order by comparing the clippings to the original newspapers that are the main sources for them. Also included are several complete issues and articles from Folks-Sztyme (1966-1976), a Yiddish newspaper published in Warsaw.
