Historical/Biographical Note

Bill Gandall (1908-1991) was an activist and veteran of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1926 and served in the 1927 intervention in Nicaragua. He subsequently became active in leftist and union politics. During the Spanish Civil War, Gandall worked mostly with Spanish troops, rather than the Lincoln Brigade. After the war, he continued his activism, including campaigning against American support for the Contras. He suffered a heart attack during a confrontation with police over the Persian Gulf War and died shortly thereafter.
