Abstract
The Tamiment Library and Robert F. Wagner Labor Archives Printed Ephemera Collection on the New American Movement is an artificial collection, collected and assembled by the Tamiment Library over the course of several decades. NAM was a socialist-feminist organization, founded in 1972, with chapters across the country. The collection consists of printed matter ranging in date from 1972-1982. Contained within the files are fliers for marches, rallies, conferences and various events, as well as pamphlets, brochures and newsletters.
Historical/Biographical Note
The New American Movement (NAM), a self-identified "new type" of socialist organization, held its founding convention in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1972. Established largely by veterans of the New Left, NAM wanted to move beyond the activism of the 1960s and rejected a vanguard approach to organizing. The group was opposed to the Vietnam War and called for the impeachment of President Richard M. Nixon. NAM's overarching goal was to create a democratic socialist society, characterized by racial, sexual and economic equality. In 1982, the organization joined with the Democratic Socialist Organizing Committee to form the Democratic Socialists of America.

Scope and Content Note
The Tamiment Library and Robert F. Wagner Labor Archives Printed Ephemera Collection on the New American Movement consists of a selection of printed material published by the organization at the national and chapter level ranging in date from 1972-1982. Contained within the collection are fliers and brochures for various NAM sponsored events, rallies, conferences and workshops. There are numerous pamphlets as well as serial publications including the national newsletter, Moving On. NAM was founded at a national convention held in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1972; the collection contains publicity materials, political statements and agendas from the convention as well as from subsequent national conventions up until 1981. There are numerous pamphlets outlining the organizations' positions on various issues. In addition to the material put out by the organization at the national level, there are also files from NAM chapters, including from Radcliffe-Harvard, Austin, and from chapters in and around the Chicago and New York areas. In 1982, NAM merged with the Democratic Socialist Organizing Committee to form the Democratic Socialists of America. The collection contains the material surrounding negotiations of the merger.
