Abstract

The Tamiment Library and Robert F. Wagner Labor Archives Printed Ephemera Collection on The Socialist International is an artificial collection, collected and assembled by the Tamiment Library over the course of several decades. The Socialist International is the worldwide organization of social democratic, socialist, and labour parties. The collection consists of printed matter ranging in date from 1950-1986. Contained within the files are press releases, bulletins, publications, and a selection of circulars put out by the Socialist International, both general circulars as well as ones published for bureau members. There is also material from the Congresses both in Albufeira, Portugal (1983) and Madrid, Spain (1980). A portion of the collection comes from various sections of the Socialist International, including the Socialist International Women and its predecessor, the International Council of Social Democratic Women, and the International Council of Socialist Youth.

Historical/Biographical Note

The Socialist International is the worldwide organization of social democratic, socialist, and labour parties. Its origins go back to the early international organizations of the labour movement, and has existed in its present form since 1951, when it was re-established at the Frankfurt Congress. Since then it has been increasingly active and grown considerably in membership, more than doubling the number of its members in recent years. Labour, social democratic, and socialist parties are now a major political force in democracies around the world, with numerous member parties of the Socialist International leading governments or representing the main opposition force.
