Abstract: Ruth Abramowitz (1924-2001) was secretary of Local 101, Utility Division of the Transport Workers Union. The collection contains thirty-five photographs depicting events in which Abramowitz took part in the 1950s. Many represent social welfare campaigns undertaken in cooperation with the Greater New York Fund. There are also photographs depicting events of New York City CIO's Community Services Committee, a labor campaign to control cancer in Brooklyn, and different events held in Atlantic City, at the United Nations, and at Sarah Lawrence College.

Historical/Biographical Note

Ruth Abramowitz (1924-2001) was born in Brooklyn, New York and lived in the various boroughs of New York for most of her life. She was secretary of Local 101, Utility Division of the Transport Workers Union. At other times she worked as a beautician, owned a company that provided eye care to union members, and for many years was assistant to the treasurer of Bonds for Israel. Abramowitz never married. In 1986 she moved to Montclair, New Jersey, where she was active Temple Shomrei Emunah and was vice-president of the sisterhood. She died in Montclair in 2001.

Scope and Contents

The collection contains thirty-five black and white photographs depicting events in which Ruth Abramowitz took part in the 1950s. Many represent social welfare campaigns undertaken in cooperation with the Greater New York Fund, in which Abramowitz participated as a representative from the Transport Workers Union, Local 101. Accompanying correspondence and press releases from the Greater New York Fund provide some identifying information for the photographs. There are also photographs depicting events of New York City CIO's Community Services Committee and a labor campaign to control cancer in Brooklyn. Also shown are events in Atlantic City, at the United Nations, and at Sarah Lawrence College. Additionally, a group of photographs were taken of a television screen, which was broadcasting a rent bill protest. Some photographs are credited to Sam Reiss and Paul Parker.
